Celso Eberhardt

February 19, 2020.

It was just a few days before the world fell silent. I entered, for the first time, behind the counter. This territory that had always been his, where time seemed to fold back on itself. Celso Eberhardt greeted me with the same gesture he used to examine cameras: an ancient, almost ritualistic care. He was the guardian of the machines that captured the gaze of others. He worked alone, but his solitude had the sound of precision and patience. He learned from his father, and then, like someone reinventing an inherited language, he created his own in the gears, the lenses, the fine dust that accompanied him. On that day, everything that had always been invisible was revealed: the hands, the craft, the time suspended in the gesture. I knew it was an instant that needed to be saved, not out of vanity, but out of love for that which endures. Today, Celso still repairs cameras, but he does so to the rhythm of his own inner clock. He continues, as true things continue, things that time cannot erase.
